How to Choose the Right Personalized Registration Plate

There’s nothing more wonderful that leaving the car dealer with a car that is yours. Even if you purchased from a used car dealer, the car is brand new to you. It’s fun to look at your new car and discover the ways you can personalize it and make it your own. One way to do this is to opt for a personalized registration plate.

Texas Specialty License Plates

Texas offers many different kinds of specialty license plates. Once you’ve decided you want a specialty plate, next, it’s time to figure out what you want on the plate.

Many people like to create a special message or number sequence for their plates, whether it’s a meaningful nickname, date or other term they want to display on their vehicle.

Rules for custom plate number combinations and various prices and fees apply, and it’s important to note that these fees are in addition to regularvehicle registration fees.

Personalized Plates

Personalized plate with a maximum of 6 characters (must have at least 1 letter):

  • $150 for 1 year
  • $400 for 3 years
  • $450 for 5 years

Personalized with 7 characters:

  • $195 for 1 year
  • $445 for 3 years
  • $495 for 5 years

Specialty Background Plates

Some drivers opt for plates with special backgrounds, showing their affiliation for a specific organization, industry or sports team. These specialty backgrounds are offered in dozens of available options.

You can also choose from a variety of plates for antique and classic cars, in addition to military tags, which can be obtained by current and former service members. If necessary, there are also disability parking permits, placards and plates.

The fees for a special background license plates are:

  • $50 for 1 year
  • $130 for 3 years
  • $175 for 5 years

Many specialty plates are offered for charity, nonprofits or other organization such as colleges, sororities and fraternities.

Other available options include sports teams, conservation and historical organizations, industry affiliation and military plates. Learn more about military options below:

Military Plates in Texas are available for medals of honor, conflicts and military service, including:

  • Medal of Honor – Air Force
  • Korea Veteran
  • U.S. Navy Retired
  • Woman Veteran

To be eligible for a military plate, your service record must reflect the service or honor displayed on the license plate.

Most plates are $30 or $40 annually.
